October 30, 2007—Anderson Cooper 360 (CNN) aired a report on the Stand 'n Seal recall that featured a client represented by O'Steen & Harrison. Dr. Walter Friedel was admitted to the hospital and spent four days in intensive care as a result of his injuries from Stand 'n Seal. Dr. Friedel purchased the grout sealer from a Home Depot in October 2005, nearly three months after the manufacturer announced the product was hazardous and issued a recall. October 9, 2007—The New York Times ran a cover story on the Stand 'n Seal recall, featuring two clients represented by O'Steen & Harrison. The story prominently chronicled the experiences of Walter Friedel, M.D., a New Jersey doctor who was rushed to the hospital and spent four days in intensive care following his use of Stand 'n Seal. Also discussed was Eileen Moreno, an office manager who was rushed to the hospital on Thanksgiving Day after using the dangerous grout sealer. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Announces Stand 'n Seal Recall |

August 31, 2005—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of 300,000 cans of Stand 'n Seal "Spray-On" Grout Sealer. As of that date, the CPSC reported that 88 consumers had reported adverse reactions after using the product, including at least 28 reports of overexposure resulting in respiratory problems. Because many serious adverse events go unreported to the CPSC, the actual number of people harmed by exposure to this product is much higher. Stand 'n Seal is associated with several life-threatening and life-altering conditions, including Reactive Airway Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS), chemical pneumonitis, and obliterated bronchitis. In April 2005, Home Depot became the exclusive seller of Stand 'n Seal "Spray-On" Grout Sealer. The product was distributed by Tile Perfect, a division of Roanoke Companies Group, Inc. |

Doctor Says Grout Sealer Caused Chemical Pneumonia |
CNN | October 30, 2007 Dr. Walter Friedel had successfully completed plenty of do-it-yourself projects around his New Jersey home. So when he bought Stand 'n Seal tile grout sealer from Home Depot in October 2005, he never imagined it might make him sick. Friedel said he read the instructions before using the product. As suggested, he ventilated the area. Yet a half hour after spraying Stand 'n Seal on the tile floor in his hot tub room, he said he could barely breathe. "By the time I made it from my bedroom to the kitchen, I was down on one knee, I was so short of breath," he said. Friedel said doctors told him a chemical in Stand 'n Seal had severely damaged 30 percent of his lungs. They said he had "chemical pneumonia" and put him in intensive care for four days. Friedel needed an oxygen tank for four months. He still struggles to walk up long flights of stairs or hills without shortness of breath, he said. |
